Thanksgiving 2020

By: Diana Avila Gutierrez October 30th, 2020

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated back in 1621 when Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians had a feast. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday.

When the Pilgrims harvest became successful they held a celebration and invited Native Americans. There isn’t an exact menu of what the Pilgrims and Wampanoag Indians had for the celebration. There is evidence that there were wild Turkeys and that men went fowling. For fowling the men could get any type of bird, not exactly Turkeys.

George Washington later named the first Thanksgiving in America in 1789 to celebrate the United States of Americas independence.

If it weren’t for Sarah Josepha Hale who wrote letters to Lincoln and convinced him to make Thanksgiving a National holiday there might not have been Thanksgiving today.

Thanksgiving is now a day to thank and eat dinner with family and friends.

 Foods to eat during Thanksgiving

  • Turkey
  •  Potatoes
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Apple Pie

Did you know that at least 46 million turkeys are killed for Thanksgiving! Many presidents have pardoned turkeys and have let them live.

As the holidays come up, in particular Thanksgiving you begin to start thinking of things or people you are most thankful for. A little background history, In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today was one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries , days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. To me, thanksgiving is more than just food, of course I love the food that is served but I love this time because my whole family comes and it’s probably the only times that we sit all together as a family and eat. Usually we don’t sit together and eat because my dad works late and sometimes my mom will work late as well, so this is why I would cherish this moment to the fullest.

The big question during this holiday is “what are you most thankful for?” I am thankful for my family and that we are all doing well and we are all healthy, I am thankful that none of us have caught the virus and we continue to stay safe. For my friends who I consider family, I am also thankful for them as well. They’ve been friends for a while but at this point I would consider them family and I am so thankful for everything they do for me and grateful I have them in my life. My little doggies, I am also thankful for them and all the entertainment they give us. I am thankful I have a roof over my head, having food and water, and I couldn’t ask for anything more. Last but not least, for my teachers who teach us everything we need to know to be successful, thank you! To everyone, take this time to think about what your thankful for and tell your loved ones that you love them. Stay safe and Happy Holidays!

Selena Quintanilla-Perez

When I think about the holidays, I think about music. When I think about music, I think about Selena Quintanilla-Perez. She’s my all time favorite singer I love every song she sang, well at least the songs she made before passing. She was so talented not just as a singer but, a model, actress and of course her passion besides singing a fashion designer. She was so beautiful and young and it was an awful thing that she had to go at just the age of 23.

Every day I think about all the amazing songs she could have made throughout the years. And I think that maybe she would have made songs about the holidays and about family. Even though Selena was Mexican, she did not know spanish. That is until her dad sat her down and taught her. Which later lead to her making her amazing music. Her father loved her dearly and was so happy that she had a passion for singing. Because her dad also sang when he was younger, even though it didn’t work out for him, he was blessed with such an amazing daughter along with his other children.

Selena received her very first grammys award. All though she passed away her legend still lives on and of course her music lives on too. I admire that she saw what she wanted to do and she went for it. Witch later on lead to fame. But she never forgot about her family, her family were her biggest supporters. They worked together until the end. People have moved on but her music and presents will never be forgotten. It seemed that Selena didn’t care much for the fame but she mostly care that she followed her dreams and made her family proud and she found her soulmate. To this day Selena is 49 years old. She was such a good person and friend. But I’m sure that she is in heaven looking over family.

Knowing that I may never touch that court again hurts. Playing basketball was my happy place, and having this sickness it’s been messing with my head. I’ve ended up getting depression, losing interest in things, and been down. Having this got to me, like why me out of everyone throwing their life away why me, someone who is trying to go out and do something. And when I got the news of not being able to play basketball because of my high blood pressure, that hurt me more. The doctors told me I could end up having a heart attack if I pushed my body too hard. I’ve ended up losing about 12 pounds making progress, but the high blood pressure is still there. I’ve been doing a lot of praying to get the chance to play basketball this year, I’ve been making progress I’m starting to do more exercises, lift weights, slowly getting back to what my body is used to.

An injury I suffered, it may be hard to get up but you have to get up

Life’s been really hard lately. I’ve been thinking of what’s the easiest way out but there isn’t an easy way out. You have to keep pushing yourself even when you think there’s no way out. Like with my I though there was going to be no way out but I slowly started getting back to what I like. Doctors are going to say I can’t play yet, I agree not yet but when I reach my potential I’m going to let it loose on that court. I’m going to make it happen, I have that mindset that I’m going to end up playing basketball this year, it’s definitely going to be one of the hardest things that I have ever done. But I believe it’s a faze that my Lord put in front of me to teach me a lesson.

That’s how it is for many of us. We’re all fighting battles that not many know of. It’s going to be hard, that’s one thing I can guarantee. But if you get through it and defeat it that’s on you. It’s how you go at it that counts. You may think that there is no way out but that thing was put in front of you because only you can handle it. If someone else were put in your situation they could’ve folded. You just push through because you can handle it, the only way you won’t be able to do it is if you are not putting your mindset to it.

Oh Hey Panthers (:

How’s the school year going ? Well I hope it’s going great! The holidays are getting closer and closer which means that we will be getting breaks! Thanksgiving (what are you thankful for ?), Christmas (what is a present you would really like this year?), and New Years which is not really a holiday but let’s consider it something to celebrate. We have thanksgiving break next week (the 22nd-29th), so don’t forget about the things or people you are thankful for that is the most important thing about thanksgiving!!

I know that I am thankful for my family and friends but also for everything I have around me. Spend time with your family and forget a little about school just not your assignments (if you have any). Also spend all time you can with your friends. This semester is almost over and so is the year which seems pretty great right! We all just want for the year to end right and we are the only ones that can do that so before the year ends try and make it the best even though it has been a pretty hard year but I now that we can do it! I hope that all of you have lots of fun laugh and just enjoy the little and big things in life with them!

Here are four hot drinks that are perfect when that cold weather hits. Coming hot and heavy is the Christmas morning from Dutch Brothers. This drink called the chia tea and white chocolate mix. Taking a sip is like waking up on Christmas morning, a feeling loved by many. It has the right amount of warmth and coffee to it. Being a mix of energy but not too much to be overwhelming. Being a cheaper drink of coffee and a friendly staff, plus you get good coffee when you go!

The Cinderella latte is not one on the menu being a secret menu from Starbucks. You might get a weird look if you ask for a Cinderella latte but luckily its just pumpkin spice and white chocolate mocha just with a pretty name. A great drink to maximize the fall but stay close with the mocha. Not many know about it and how good it is.

Coming back with another Starbucks drink is the salted cream caramel cold brew, this drink doesn’t have any fall  or winter special ingredients but it’s a nice cold drink to  still give off the chilly weather feel. Being a perfect mix of caramel and the energy with cold brew.

And finally an easy make at home drink, the peanut butter and Nutella hot chocolate. This drink is perfect, consisting of a rich flavor and bringing us back to the Christmas season.

Quarter 2 Has Arrived

As we reached the end of the first quarter, Harrison students were treated with a week off of school. Some students used this to catch up on any missing work, while others simply enjoyed the bliss of having a break in the midst of our new crazy year. And yet, we are still unable to enjoy a “normal break”. So how do students spend their time in the midst of a pandemic? From playing video games, to playing sports with a few people, students at Harrison are learning to adapt to our new normal.

Getting our first break was a refreshing way for students to unwind after the hard work they have been putting in. Of course, relaxing is different to each person. Whether you spent your days curled up watching a movie marathon or spent hours at the skatepark, having the break was a perfect way for students to reset and get back into a healthier, hard-working mindset. Most students have been giving a tantamous amount of effort in order to keep up with their work, especially at home. I believe being able to step back for a moment to recognize the work we put in and enjoy a reward for our efforts is going to help us as students continue to put in our utmost effort. Our fall break was a nice way for us as students to take the break we needed as well as getting our heads in the game for Quarter Two.

Fall is finally here!!! Let’s all get in the fall! I think we are all excited for fall since it is such a pretty season especially when the leaves start to fall and when they start to change colors as well. Even though it has not been the best year we are here to make it end right and with the right people! The holidays (Halloween, thanksgiving, Christmas and let’s not forget New Years) are also on their way, spend time with family and friends but hey, don’t forget all the good food we are going to eat.

Harrison seems to be coming into the fall vibes.!! Spirit week is the 27-30th of October. I hope that all you have fun and are creative especially with your Halloween costumes. We hope to see everyone dressed up as something just to follow all the rules. Have fun.!

Our school hasn’t said much about sports or after school activities or anything that relates to that. We really do hope to hear new things about that since I think we all want to go back to our normal lives and participate in school activities! As well we all have hope that this will end quickly but other than that enjoy life and spend time with family and friends.

World Languages

As many people know I do speak two languages which are Spanish and English, however I do plan on learning many more languages. I am from Mexico City, and the rest of my family is from Guanajuato, getting to teach people about my culture is so beautiful. However, a lot of people I know do not speak Spanish and they want to learn and I think it’s so cool to see people wanting to learn new languages. So I thought it would be a good idea to teach you guys some words you may need to use in your everyday lives. Just the basics would be simple words like Hello →Hola, Good Morning → Buenos Dias, Bye → Adios, Goodnight → Buenas Noches, Thank You → Gracias, Please → Por Favor, and for the who, what, when, where, and why it would be Who? → Quien? What? → Que? When? → Cuando? Where? → Donde? Why? → Porque?. These are just simple words you can start out by learning and could possibly even get you to talk to someone in a full sentence. Full sentences you could say to get a conversation going would be Hi, how is your day going? → Hola, tu dia como te va? There is so much more to the spanish language and if you ever want to learn more spanish, don’t be afraid to ask someone, or even get into classes that teach you. Learning something new can be scary and nervous at first and if you don’t say the words right at first it’s okay and all that matters is you’re learning.
