We all know and love chocolate, it is great to eat, to gift to someone, and just taste super good. But where does this delicious delicacy come from and how long has it be around. The history of chocolate began in Mesoamerica, The Mexica believed that the cacao seeds were given to them as a gift form Quetzalcoatl ( the god of wisdom). And if you think chocolate is popular now, know that the cacao seed had so much value it was used as a form of currency. Fermented beverages made from chocolate date back to at least 1900 BC to 1500 BC. One of the earliest civilizations in Latin America, were the first to turn the cacao plant into chocolate. They drank their chocolate during rituals and even used it as medicine.

Each cacao tree produces approximately 2,500 beans and It takes 400 cocoa beans to make one pound of chocolate, which means that one cacao tree can make about 6 pounds of chocolate. So next time your eating your chocolate think about how many cacao beans they had to use to make it. Another fun fact about chocolate is that it took 8 years to make the recipe for milk chocolate.
